Central bank to investigate issuance of a “general-purpose” complement to cash

The South African Reserve Bank (Sarb) has become the latest central bank to launch a feasibility study on issuing a digital currency.

The Sarb said it would explore an electronic form of legal tender for retail use, which could act as a complement to cash. “The objective of the feasibility study is to consider how the issuance of a general-purpose CBDC will feed into the Sarb’s policy position and mandate,” the central bank said in a statement on May 26.
